On behalf of Pon Power, EMHA was able to make a unique contribution from various areas of expertise during the engineering and acceptance phases of a large number of Caterpillar variable speed generator sets, destined for various luxury yachts.
During the engineering phase, the designs were optimised for maximum reduction of vibration and noise. Key focus areas included the correct selection of flexible couplings, vibration dampers and flexible connections. Generator support frames were designed and optimised using FEM analyses. The challenge and complexity of this process was characterised in particular by:
- Multiple disciplines and stakeholders involved
- Limited space on board
- High power outputs at variable speeds
- High comfort requirements
For the factory acceptance tests (FATs) of these generator sets, we worked together with Pon Power to physically optimise the test setup, ensuring it was suitable for testing the generator sets prior to their installation on board.
During the acceptance tests (FATs), our Diagnostics engineers carried out noise and vibration measurements on the generator sets to validate that the design and configuration meet the client’s requirements.
This approach and collaboration between Pon Power and EMHA has resulted in a reliable and validated configuration for each individual set, minimising problems and unforeseen situations on board. Together with our valued client Pon Power, EMHA is proud of the result achieved.
Through close collaboration, we completed a unique process in which each party’s expertise perfectly complemented the other, leading to an excellent end result and a satisfied end client.
