For a new-build inland tanker from Union Shipping, EMHA was involved in the design of the complete propeller shaft installation. Thanks to a combination of specialist knowledge and in-house engineering, we delivered a fully substantiated design package. This formed the basis for a smooth assessment by the classification society.
Situation
In the development of a new inland vessel, the propeller shaft installation is a crucial component for reliable propulsion. The design must not only meet stringent class requirements, but also ensure optimal power transmission and long service life. Union Shipping’s objective was to realise a technically robust and well-documented solution that was immediately suitable for approval by the classification society and could be produced without complications.
Approach
- EMHA handled the complete design process of the propeller shaft installation. Based on the applicable Bureau Veritas rules, we designed the propeller shaft and incorporated all relevant loads and safety factors into the calculations. We also verified the coupling flange connection with the reversing coupling to guarantee a reliable and stress-free connection.
- The bearing selection was also carried out by EMHA, tailored to the specific load and operating conditions of the vessel. To ensure the translation to production, our engineers drew up detailed production drawings for the propeller shaft, the coupling flange and the machining of the stern tube. This resulted in a complete and practically executable design.
Result
EMHA’s design package provided a solid and fully substantiated basis for approval by the classification society. The integral approach of design, verification and detailing enabled production to be carried out efficiently and without any differences in interpretation.
Union Shipping benefits from an optimally designed propeller shaft installation that meets all requirements in terms of safety, reliability and service life. The project underlines the added value of EMHA as an engineering partner that seamlessly connects design and execution.
