Measuring, analysing and solving: Johannes at EMHA

Measuring, analysing and solving: Johannes at EMHA

Meet the Team – Johannes Hoogland

Johannes has been part of the EMHA team for a number of years. As a diagnostics project engineer, his day-to-day work involves analysing complex systems and troubleshooting faults. He also recently obtained his degree in mechatronics, a milestone that ties in perfectly with his practical work.

“My work as a diagnostics engineer involves drawing up measurement plans, carrying out measurements, and analysing and reporting on the measurement data.”

His work often begins with a query from the client, although this is by no means always clear. It is up to Johannes and his colleagues to first clarify the query, after which they carry out measurements, analyse the data and ultimately come up with a solution.

What makes his work so interesting? The combination of engineering, problem-solving and continuous learning.

“No two days are the same; it’s a combination of engineering, problem-solving and sometimes just thinking logically until it all adds up. Sometimes it feels like solving a rebus, but in real life.”

What makes working at EMHA enjoyable?

For Johannes, the enjoyment lies mainly in the variety and the people.

“The wide variety of projects and the places you get to visit make the work special. What’s more, the people you work with are really great.”

From impressive project sites to completely different installations: every assignment calls for a new approach. And that’s precisely what ensures he’s constantly challenged.

Helping customers also plays an important role. Often they don’t know exactly where the problem lies, and it’s precisely the process of identifying and resolving it that brings satisfaction.

What gives him energy?

Johannes draws energy from getting to the bottom of complex issues.

“I get energy from getting to the bottom of things. When something is unclear at first and you make it clear – that moment.”

From formulating the right question to delivering a clear report: the whole process gives him energy, especially when the client can actually move forward with the result.

His work in three words

Challenging – Educational – Varied

A project he’ll never forget

One of the projects that has stayed with him took place during a sea trial in Romania. During critical measurements, his rev counter (an essential part of the measurement system) failed.

Instead of halting the project, Johannes came up with a solution on the spot. Using a series of connected 9-volt batteries, he built a temporary power supply so that he could continue taking measurements.

“Thanks to my knowledge of mechatronics, I knew how the sensor worked and what it required, which enabled me to build a solution myself.”

A fine example of creativity, technical knowledge and perseverance in practice.

If he could choose one superpower for his work…

Johannes doesn’t need to think twice:

“It would be ideal if my test setup could set itself up and take itself down. That would save an enormous amount of time.”

A practical superpower, perfectly suited to his work in the field.

And which song makes him unable to sit still?

For Johannes, it doesn’t have to be a mainstream hit.

“I can’t sit still when I’m playing music on the piano myself.”

He has been playing the piano since he was young and particularly enjoys styles such as ragtime, classical and improvisation. For him, music is a creative outlet alongside his technical work.
