In 1942, the Amsterdammer-class tugboat Oude Waal 3 was built at the Voorwaarts shipyard. It was powered by an Industriemotor 3VD6 engine, with a maximum speed of 340 revolutions per minute, affectionately known as a ‘slow-runner’.
Following its launch, the tug entered service with Mr C. Schipper. In the decades that followed, the vessel changed hands several times, until it eventually came under the care of the Stichting Erfgoed Schepen. For the past few years, this maritime gem has once again been in private ownership.
Recently, the Oude Waal 3 was at Bas Strumpel’s in Alphen aan den Rijn for maintenance work. The engine was completely overhauled at the workshop of F. Kooyman Scheepsreparatie en Dieselservice BV in Krimpen aan de IJssel. Following this overhaul, the engine was reinstalled on board. EMHA was then called in to align the engine to within a tenth of a millimetre and to undercoat it with Chockfast Orange, a durable epoxy that ensures the engine is properly underfilled.
Thanks to this collaboration between skilled professionals, the Oude Waal 3 can once again sail reliably for many years to come, with historical charm and modern technology coming together seamlessly in this special piece of sailing heritage.
