Back to projects

On behalf of Hidrostal, EMHA carried out work on city pump P2 of the Bergen op Zoom sewage pumping station, managed by the Brabantse Delta Water Authority. The project was initiated due to elevated vibration levels that threatened the reliability and lifespan of the pump installation. Through targeted measurements, analysis, and a custom solution, EMHA restored the installation to stable and fully operational condition.

Situation

The Bergen op Zoom sewage pumping station plays an important role in transporting wastewater within the Brabantse Delta Water Authority’s service area. The pumps in the station operate continuously and must function reliably under varying conditions.

In city pump P2, elevated vibration levels were observed. This posed a risk to the operational reliability of the installation and could eventually lead to malfunctions, increased maintenance, and accelerated wear.

The purpose of the requested vibration measurements was to:

  • determine the cause of the elevated vibration levels;
  • use the measured frequencies and amplitudes as input for a finite element analysis;
  • technically substantiate and validate the proposed solution with pipe and motor supports.

EMHA’s Solution

EMHA conducted extensive vibration analyses at different operating points of city pump P2. The measurement results were compared with the permissible vibration values specified by the manufacturer.

Based on this analysis, EMHA determined that the elevated vibrations were not primarily caused by the pump set itself, but by insufficient support of the motor and piping.

EMHA then:

  • designed a custom solution for additional support from the motor to the wall;
  • produced the required supports;
  • installed the supports on-site within one day.

After installation, vibration measurements were repeated to verify the effectiveness of the measure.

Result

After installing the additional supports, the vibration levels returned to normal and permissible values. As a result, the pump can once again operate fully and reliably in the process.

With this solution, EMHA has contributed directly to:

  • improving operational reliability;
  • extending the lifespan of the pump installation;
  • reducing unplanned downtime and maintenance.

By first measuring and analysing carefully, the true cause of the vibrations could be accurately identified. In many cases, issues of this nature are not caused by the pump set itself, but by the conditions in which the pump must operate.

This approach prevents unnecessary replacement of components and results in a sustainable, cost‑efficient solution.
